Platinum Records: Giorgio Moroder’s “Flashdance” at the Museum Gherdëina
The soundtrack to the film “Flashdance” was arguably Giorgio Moroder’s greatest success. The film composer, songwriter and pioneer of disco music recently in 2016 handed over a symbol of this success to the Museum Gherdëina in his hometown of Ortisei, consisting of 13 platinum records, representing the 13 million copies of the “Flashdance” soundtrack sold.“This film was probably my greatest success. It earned me the second of my three Oscars in 1984 and made me even more widely known in the United States,” said Giorgio Moroder at the handover event.
The platinum records not only represent the worldwide success of the composer from Val Gardena but also point to a future collaboration between Giorgio Moroder and the Museum Gherdëina as part of a larger joint exhibition project. As part of this project, further objects will be added to the collection to illustrate the various stages of Giorgio Moroder’s career.
Upon receiving the records, the president of the museum Wolfgang Moroder emphasized what an honor it was to receive them and how much they enriched the museum’s collection. He added that “They are a first step towards giving the musical career of a world-famous artist from Val Gardena the place it deserves in music history” and awarded Giorgio Moroder with the silver medal of the Museum Gherdëina and named him an honorary member.
Ahead of Giorgio Moroder’s concert on August 12th 2016, on Saint Antonius square in Ortisei, the platinum records for “Flashdance” are on display at Museum Gherdëina.
